Giants DE Jason Pierre-Paul had 12.5 sacks in 2014.

A contingent of New York Giants team officials is traveling to Miami to check on the status of injured defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul, a person with knowledge of the situation confirmed to USA TODAY Sports.

The person was not authorized to speak publicly about the situation and spoke under condition of anonymity.

Pierre-Paul injured both hands while setting off fireworks during a Fourth of July celebration Saturday night, according to an ESPN report, which claims he suffered severe burns but is unlikely to have permanent damage.

ESPN first reported the meeting with Giants officials in Miami.

Pierre-Paul continues to be held for further observation at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, according to another person with knowledge of the situation who was not authorized to speak publicly about his case because his family has asked for privacy.

NFL Network reported the Giants have pulled a $60 million contract offer to Pierre-Paul, who was designated with the franchise tag in March. Pierre-Paul, 26, has not yet signed the $14.8-million tender and had been absent from New York's offseason program.

Both sides have until the July 15 deadline to work out a long-term deal. If they cannot agree to a multi-year contract by then, Pierre-Paul won't have the opportunity to sign one until after the 2015 season and will have the option of playing under the franchise tag, or sitting out the season.

Pierre-Paul collected 77 tackles, 12½ sacks and three forced fumbles last season, after he dealt with nagging injuries in 2012 and 2013 that stifled his production. He has 42 career sacks in five seasons.
