Google quickly deletes Android mascot peeing on Apple

COLUMBUS, SC – Google relies on users to contribute content to its Google Maps product, much in the same way Wikipedia does.

Recently though, someone generated a contribution was somewhat less than authoritative.

Using available tools, a user dropped an image onto the northern Pakistani city of Rawalpindi depicting an Android logo relieving itself on an Apple logo.

Android is an operating system for mobile devices developed by Google for use on smartphones and tablets.

The image showed up just as the Apple watch went on sale. It's unknown whether there was any connection between the two.

The image was in place for approximately one day before it was removed by Google Maps on Friday. But not before users around the world had spread the word--and the picture.

Google says the origin of a good portion of content included in its map product is contributed by everyday users.

These are usually business name corrections, adjustments to the latitude-longitude location of a place or information like the website or phone number of a business.

A Google spokesperson said the majority of users who edit its maps provide great contributions. Not in this case, though.

"We're sorry for this inappropriate user-created content; we worked to remove it quickly," the spokesperson said.

Google says it's working on ways to improve ways to prevent, detect and remove inappropriate contributions.

Users can let the company know about issues by clicking the 'Report a problem' button in the bottom corner of a map so they can be fixed quickly.
