Can Islanders extend their stay at Nassau Coliseum?

Could we be seeing the final NHL game at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum today?

If the Washington Capitals win in Game 6, then the Islanders will say goodbye to the arena they have called home since 1972.

The arena is outdated – it seemed outdated when USA TODAY did a book on arenas in 1994 – so not many will shed a tear when the team moves to Barclays Center next season.

The arena’s charm is its history. Four consecutive championships from 1980-83, six retired numbers, plenty of Hall of Famers. Those banners will make the trip 25 miles west.

Part of that history is how well the Islanders do in Game 6 at home, a 12-3 record. That includes wins in 1975 when the Islanders rallied from one 3-0 deficit and nearly another. It includes an overtime win in 1980 for their first Stanley Cup. It includes a Game 6 win in 1987 as the Islanders rallied from a 3-1 deficit against the Capitals.

Even if the Islanders do pull off a win tonight, they’d have to win in Washington in Game 7 on Monday to stay alive.

But the Islanders have done that before. Maybe there is still a little magic left at Nassau Coliseum.
