The first round of the ultimate fast food bracket gave us a major upset as No. 1 McDonald’s was sent packing by king of the drink, Sonic. In all, five underdogs came out on top and punched tickets to the Sweet 16, leaving the contest wide open.

With McDonald’s dispatched, the Burger Region pits Sonic against No. 5 Burger King, and the lone top seed to win in the region, Wendy’s, takes on No. 6 Carl’s Jr.

Things went more to plan in the classy burger region. No. 1 In-N-Out, No. 2 Five Guys, and No. 3 Shake Shack all advanced to the next round. The one upset was hardly that, as Fatburger trounced over-seeded No. 4 Burger Fi.

The Sandwich Region also saw a huge upset, after Firehouse Subs knocked off No. 2 Potbelly. Top-seeded Subway survived an early scare at the hands of No. 8 Arby’s to advance as well.

The Not a Burger Region has the marquee matchup of the Sweet 16. No. 2 Chiptole will do battle with No. 3 Taco Bell in a matchup that is sure to divide homes. On the other side of the region, two mavens of chicken – Chick-fil-A and Popeyes – will rumble for a spot in the Elite Eight.

Voting begins at 9 a.m. and concludes at midnight!
