NFL Network airs Thursday Night Football on a Saturday, confuses everyone

The Philadelphia Eagles and the Washington Redskins played on Saturday in what the NFL Network calls “Thursday Night Football: Saturday Edition.” This is what happens when the NFL plays a Saturday game under a Thursday night television contract.

To reiterate: this game was not played at night, but in the afternoon, and was not played on a Thursday, but a Saturday.

It’s also not new. There have been regular-season games on Saturdays every season since the merger save for 2013.

It may not be a novel thing, but that doesn’t make the whole thing any less intellectually bankrupt. To be sure, commitment to a brand is important, but Thursday Night Football isn’t exactly that popular. Football played on three days’ rest is generally subpar anyway, so why not ditch the whole thing all together and just do, and also say that we did “Saturday Football”?

“Thursday Night Football on a Saturday” is also really confusing and off-putting to a lot people.
