PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — Jayden Ramos is the 13-year-old son of late NYPD officer Rafael Ramos, who was one of two policemen shot in the line of duty in Brooklyn this December.

The Mets’ David Wright reached out to Jayden and his brother after the tragedy to offer his condolences, and to offer them the opportunity to join the Mets during spring training and act as team batboys. Jayden showed up on Friday and got all set up to hang with the team.

“He was a little shy at first, but he’s starting to open up,” Wright said. “I think he’s enjoying himself.”

The shooting of Officer Ramos struck Wright close to home — his father, Rhon, was a police officer in Norfolk, Va., and his charity, Wright Thing, has often supported various NYPD officers and initiatives.

Wright first spoke with Ramos’ sons on Christmas Eve, when he called the families of the late officers.

“I sat around my phone for some time, just staring at the phone, thinking, trying to play out the conversation in my head,” he said. “I had no idea what to say. I had no clue. And there are times, on the phone, you hear the kids’ voices — and it’s Christmas Eve — you obviously get emotional. It’s tough.

“There’s nothing you can say or do to fully understand what these kids are going through, what these families are going through. And then once you get on the phone with them, you’re at a loss for words because you just don’t know how to articulate how sorry you are for the loss of a hero.”
