England loses World Cup semifinal in the most devastating way imaginable

England was this close to at least getting the chance to play for its first World Cup title since 1966, but it turns out that the women’s side has worse luck than the men.

They played Japan close in the World Cup semifinal and were carrying a 1-1 tie into what looked like extra time and maybe penalties.

That was until the 92nd minute when Laura Bassett gave up a heartbreaking own goal to send Japan through to the final with a bungled clearance that went in off the crossbar.

Poor Laura Bassett. Someone–anyone– go give her a hug immediately.

Japan will face the United States in the World Cup final on Sunday.
