'Minions' party: Billion at box office
The Minions have one billion reasons to celebrate. And we know the little yellow guys like to party.
Illumination Entertainment's animated hit Minions crossed $1 billion at the worldwide box office Thursday night.
That's billion with a "b." Like the Minions' beloved bananas.
Grosses for the animated film hit $682 million internationally and $321.9 million in North America, according to a release from distributor Universal, sent out on Friday,
Minions is now the third-highest-grossing animated film of all time and the 23rd highest grossing film of all time.
Featuring the voices of Sandra Bullock and Jon Hamm, as a super-villain couple in the swinging 1960s, Minions opened No. 1 in the U.S. with $115 million on July 10.
It is Universal's highest-grossing film of all time in seven territories; France, Germany, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia and Slovakia. It has has crossed $200 million in Latin America to become the highest-grossing animated film of all time in that region.
The damage is not done.
Minions has three markets still to open in addition to Italy's release today: Turkey (Sept. 4), China (Sept. 13) and Greece (Sept. 24).
