5 things to know about the NHL trade deadline market

With three more desirable players traded Wednesday, the marketplace seems to be thinning out before Monday’s 3 p.m., ET, NHL trade deadline.

Here are five things we know as we approach the last weekend:

1. Jeff Petry’s value on the rise: With Andrej Sekera now gone, the Edmonton Oilers’ veteran is the top “rental” defenseman. With a number of teams still looking for a defenseman, the Oilers have to be hoping they can squeeze a hefty return for Petry. The best guess is the Oilers will get a quality prospect and a second-round pick. Sekera went from the Hurricanes to the Los Angeles Kings for a first-round pick and a prospect. The other much-discussed potential rental is Zbynek Michalek of the Arizona Coyotes. The Tampa Bay Lightning, Anaheim Ducks, Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings are among the teams that have looked at the defense marketplace.

2. Toronto Maple Leafs could end up with a bundle of picks: The Leafs have already moved Cody Franson, Mike Santorelli and Daniel Winnik and they probably are not done. Defenseman Roman Polak is attractive because he has another season left on his contract paying him $3.1 million. The Leafs could also move a goalie, and there has been rumbling in the marketplace about Tyler Bozak drawing some interest because he is a reasonably priced No. 2 center at a $4.2 million cap hit. He has 16 goals and 37 points for a poor team, and he wins more than 51% of his draws. He is tied up for three more seasons. The Maple Leafs, embracing a rebuilding effort, have already landed a picks in the first, second, fourth and seventh rounds, plus prospect Brendan Leipsic. Toronto defenseman Dion Phaneuf and Phil Kessel are available, but it would difficult for any contender to give up the necessary assets, and fit Kessel into their salary cap situation. Trading them in the summer would give the Maple Leafs more options.

3. Mixed reviews on Buffalo’s Chris Stewart: Stewart’s size and scoring ability, plus his expiring contract, make him a candidate to be moved to a contender, but some of the teams trolling for scorers are not interested in Stewart because of his inconsistency. He scored his 10th goal of the season last game to end a 10-game goalless slump. The Sabres will be able to trade him, but it doesn’t seem like teams will part with a second-round pick in the deal

4. Philadelphia’s Kimmo Timonen on the market?: Now recovered from his blood clot issue, Timonen is expected to make his season debut Saturday against the New York RangersRangers. He has played almost 1,100 NHL games and teams would be interested if he doesn’t look too rusty. He has a $2 million salary, and a $3.5 million cap hit.

5. Teams worrying about ‘rental’ mishaps: Some of the teams with players to move are concerned about those players becoming injured. That’s a reason why the Carolina Hurricanes decided to move Jiri Tlusty and Andrej Sekera Thursday. That is a legitimate concern. The Arizona Coyotes are hoping to turn Antoine Vermette into a first-round pick or a quality package. Imagine how they would feel if he is injured before being dealt? The return will get for him is probably already figured into their reset plans.
