St. John's Red Storm alum Chris Mullin is inducted into the St. John's hall of fame in February.

St. John's has hired Chris Mullin as its new head coach, according to a person with knowledge of the decision.

The person spoke to USA TODAY Sports on condition of anonymity because the decision has not been announced.

A news conference is scheduled for Wednesday, the person told USA TODAY Sports.

The decision comes 30 years to the day St. John's, led by Mullin, played in the Final Four.

On Friday, St. John's and Steve Lavin mutually agreed to part ways after five seasons.

Lavin was 81-55 at St. John's, but the Red Storm were 2-9 under Lavin in the Big East Tournament, NCAA Tournament and NIT. The outgoing senior class went 0-4 in the Big East tournament.

Mullin was a three-time All-American and three-time Big East Player of the Year for St. John's in the 1980s, finishing his career as the school's all-time leading scorer with 2,440 points.

Mullin is a two-time Olympic gold medalist for the USA (1984, '92), and he was drafted in the first round by the Golden State Warriors in 1985.

Since retiring from the NBA in 2001, Mullin has worked in the front offices of the Sacramento Kings and Golden State Warriors.
