Crowd erupts when team manager with Down syndrome scores basket on Senior Night

On Friday, the Pelham High School boys basketball team dominated Prospect Mountain of Alton on Senior Night, but one player was the true star of the game: the team’s manager, Bryan Doherty.

Doherty, a senior who also has Down syndrome, has been the manager of Pelham’s boys basketball and football teams for four years. And during Friday’s game, he put on his team’s jersey, stepped on the court, and scored a basket.

And the crowd went wild.

Doherty reflected on the experience to the Lowell Sun:

“This was the greatest day of my life. I love practicing and training,” he said. “Tonight I got to play and it was an awesome feeling.”

An all-around winning night for the team.
