Red Velvet OREO cookies coming in February.

They've done limited-edition flavors such cookie dough, marshmallow crispy and even watermelon in the past.

Now, Oreo Cookies is introducing a red velvet version across the U.S. starting Feb. 2 just in time for Valentine's Day. The cookie will be available for a limited time. The cookie center is cream cheese-flavored.

The brand is also inviting folks to win free samples before the flavor comes out by visiting www.OREORedVelvetRope.com. Oreo will select 20,250 people to be the first to taste these red velvet cookies, according to the website. The offer ends at 11:59 p.m. on January 22.

"We knew there was a lot of love out there for the flavor red velvet … and for OREO, so we asked ourselves, why not combine the two?" said Janda Lukin, senior director for Oreo North America.

This is the first time since 2004 with the Golden Oreo that the brand is featuring a new cookie flavor and color.

USA TODAY editors, reporters and digital folks provided mixed reviews on the cookie.

Senior product manager Sarah Schmalbach said, "The cookie itself is good but the creme is too strong."

USA TODAY's social media editor Mary Nahorniak said she would take the original Oreo over one of these. "They are crazy sweet. I don't actually like red velvet because I think it tastes like fake chocolate (just have chocolate! It's way better), but these weren't bad," she said.

News editor Anne Willette agreed, saying "It was a pale comparison to the original Oreo cookie." Others in the newsroom simply said, "That's good."
