VCU star guard Briante Weber tears ACL, MCL in loss
Virginia Commonwealth lost its most important player for the season on Saturday afternoon.
Starting point guard Briante Weber — the engine that makes the program's signature HAVOC defense hum — tore his ACL, MCL and meniscus when he landed awkwardly with three minutes remaining in VCU's game against Richmond, according to a VCU spokesman. Weber's collegiate career is over.
He was 12 steals shy of the all-time NCAA record.
"Briante came down awkwardly on his knee," VCU coach Shaka Smart said after the game. "I didn't see how he came down, but he hurt his knee on the landing."
No. 15 VCU entered Saturday on a 12-game winning streak, and a win against Richmond would have matched its best stretch in Smart's tenure. The Rams started off right on track, but ultimately lost 64-55 to cross-city rival Richmond. The bigger loss, obviously, was Weber, for the season.
The Rams return to action against George Mason on Wednesday.
