Mookie Betts makes amazing grab, flips over outfield wall, gives up homer anyway

The White Sox were leading the Red Sox 5-2 at the top of the sixth on Tuesday night when Jose Abreu stepped up to the plate and smacked a would-be homer.

Red Sox centerfielder Mookie Betts tracked it down, and almost robbed Abreu. Almost.

It was initially ruled a catch, but after a White Sox challenge, the umpires found that Betts dropped the ball after his momentum carried him into and over the outfield wall, and amended the call to a home run, stretching the White Sox lead to four.

Betts was forced to leave the game after the accident.

Here’s the rule that explains the call:

All of that’s totally legitimate and rules are rules and all, but just imagine being the kind of ump that doesn’t give that to Betts.

UPDATE: After leaving the game, Betts began to exhibit concussion-like symptoms, and is likely to be placed on the disabled list for seven days.
