ATLANTA — Mindy Kaling, from TV's The Mindy Project, recently came here to plug her sitcom by pressing the flesh with fans at the SCAD aTVfest.

We met her there and got to talk about her favorite form of communication: tweeting.

The writer/producer/actress happens to be one of the Internet's most prolific tweeters — more than 12,600. That's twice as many as Katy Perry, Twitter's most followed celebrity. How can she have so much to say in 140 characters or less?

TWEETING

Kaling has more than 3.7 million followers on Twitter, where she often tweets as many as five times a day.

"I'm a comedy writer, so for me the medium of writing jokes is perfectly suited for Twitter," she says. "It's a way to get ideas out quickly. It will be an observation I have, and often people will say, 'I had that same thought.'"

Mindy Kaling, star of Fox's "The Mindy Project," loves to tweet.

TWITTER OVER FACEBOOK

Kaling has a Facebook page, but she doesn't do much with it beyond re-posting photos from Instagram, the photo-sharing app that's owned by Facebook. (She has more than 1 million followers on Instagram.)

"Facebook is a little time consuming in the way Twitter and Instagram aren't," she says. "It seems more like a community, and the way you search for other people can be addictive in a way I don't have time for with the show. I think it's awesome, and I would be on it if I weren't doing the show."

Instagram, however, "is so fun, if you love fashion or just the way things look," Kaling says. "I travel to so many different, interesting places, the people who like my show, especially the young women, want to experience that and see what that's like. I can share that (on Instagram) without spending a lot of time on it."

TWEETING AND INSTAGRAM DEVICE

It's the iPhone 5. She tried the newer, larger iPhone 6 with the improved camera but gave it to her dad. She thought it was too big for fitting into purses and pouches, and she was more comfortable with the older iPhone. "I become attached to things," she says.

APPS

As someone who shops "constantly," her two favorite apps to shop with are the Shopbop and Net-a-Porter apps, which are "indispensable at this point for me," she says.

Shopbop (free, Apple, Android) bills itself as a "daily shopping destination" for the woman on the go, while Net-a-Porter (free, Apple, Android) is a guide to new women's fashions.
