NCAA tournament Elite 8 preview: Wisconsin vs. Arizona

David Leon Moore

Sam Dekker rose up for a career-high 23 points in Wisconsin's Sweet 16 win against North Carolina.

No. 1 Wisconsin (34-3) vs. No. 2 Arizona (34-3)

Time, TV: 6:09 p.m., TBS

Where: Los Angeles

Why Wisconsin will win: The Badgers, the top seed in the West, have the nation's most efficient offense. They turn the ball over on just 12.5% of their possessions, the best in the nation. They keep opponents off the free-throw line better than any team. All-American Frank Kaminsky was held in check in the first half against North Carolina Thursday but rebounded in the second half to finish with 19 points, and forward Sam "Slam" Dekker scored a career-high 23 points.

Why Arizona will win: There's a reason the Wildcats are a No. 2 seed. Arizona is strong in the paint, athletic on the wings and sure-handed in the backcourt, which helps explain why Sean Miller's team is viewed as a realistic contender for the national championship. The Wildcats need to stay relatively error-free and make a high percentage of shots to beat Wisconsin. Point guard T.J. McConnell — 17 points, seven rebounds, five assists against Xavier Thursday — is the gritty floor leader.

History lesson: History, in this case, is all about last year. In almost the exact same setup as this year, Wisconsin and Arizona met for the West Regiol title in Anaheim. The game was a classic, Wisconsin winning in overtime 64-63 in a nail-biter that came down to a block/charge call, Wisconsin guard Josh Gasser drawing a charge on Arizona's Nick Johnson on the decisive possession. Kaminsky went wild, with 28 points, six in overtime. At the Final Four, Wisconsin lost by a point to Kentucky in a national semifinal.
