Astronauts aboard the International Space Station captured some fantastic and awe-inspiring shots of Super Typhoon Maysak and its cavernous eye today.

The typhoon, now spinning in the far western Pacific Ocean with winds of 150 mph, was forecast to weaken and hit the Philippines over the weekend with winds of about 105 mph.

While these shots are quite cool, the storm is violent and destructive. It ravaged parts of Micronesia, killing five people in Chuuk on Sunday afternoon, according to the Pacific Daily News. Chuuk is one of the four states of the Federated States of Micronesia.

The storm's peak winds were about 160 mph Tuesday, making it among the most powerful typhoons for this early in the year in the western Pacific basin.
