Reggie Jackson, Pistons agree to five-year, $80 million deal
The Detroit Pistons have chosen their point guard of the future.
Nearly five months after landing Reggie Jackson via trade from the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Pistons came to terms with their 25-year-old restricted free agent on a five-year, $80 million deal on Sunday. The deal was confirmed to USA TODAY Sports by a person with knowledge of the terms who spoke on the condition of anonymity because it can't be finalized until the free agency moratorium lifts on July 9.
Only time will tell how this works with fellow point guard Brandon Jennings.
The Pistons' other 25-year-old point guard tore his ACL in a Jan. 24 game against the Milwaukee Bucks and was done for the season, and his future in Detroit was almost instantly in doubt. Jennings, who came to Detroit via sign-and-trade two summers ago, has just one season left on his contract worth $8.3 million.
Jackson, who was taken 24th overall out of Boston College in 2011, had longed for the chance to be a starter during his three-plus seasons in Oklahoma City. The early days of that duty in Detroit came with mixed results, as he averaged (17.6 points, 9.2 assists, 4.7 rebounds and 3.5 turnovers per game but led the Pistons to just 10 wins in 27 games. Detroit went just 32-50 overall, missing the playoffs for the sixth consecutive time. Yahoo Sports first reported Jackson's agreement.
