Marlins acquire INF Martin Prado from Yankees

USAToday
Martin Prado, who has played all over the diamond, will likely start at third base for the Miami Marlins.

The Miami Marlins' active offseason continued Friday with a trade for infielder Martin Prado from the New York Yankees.

The Yankees acquired pitcher Nathan Eovaldi, first baseman Garrett Jones and prospect Domingo German, while the Marlins also get pitcher David Phelps.

The Marlins have remade most of their infield this offseason, acquiring second baseman Dee Gordon in a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers and signing Michael Morse to play first base. Prado is likely to play third base, pushing Casey McGehee to the bench.

Prado is a versatile player who will provide stability to the Marlins' lineup. The 31-year-old hit .282/.321/.412 (batting average/on-base percentage/slugging percentage) last season with the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Yankees, but he sports a career .291/.340/.429 line.

He has two years, $22 million remaining on a contract he signed with the Diamondbacks in 2013. Prado was dealt to the Yankees at the trade deadline.

His departure leaves Brendan Ryan or prospects Rob Refsnyder and Jose Pirela as the leading candidates to start at second base in New York.

Eovaldi, 24, is a hard-throwing right-hander who posted a 4.37 ERA and 1.33 WHIP in 199 2/3 innings last season, while striking out 120. He'll infuse youth and upside into a rotation that has a number of question marks entering 2015.

Jones hit .246/.309/.411 in 496 at-bats last season, predominantly playing first base. The 33-year-old also has experience playing the outfield corners. He will be valuable insurance behind Mark Teixeira, who has battled injuries in recent seasons.

Phelps, 28, threw 113 innings, split between starting and relieving, and recorded a 4.38 ERA and 1.42 WHIP for the Yankees. He struck out 92. With the Marlins also acquiring Mat Latos and Dan Haren this offseason, Phelps could slot in at the end of the rotation, at least until Jose Fernandez returns from Tommy John surgery.

German, 22, recorded a 2.48 ERA in 123 innings in Single-A last season.
