Prince William and Duchess Kate land in New York

USA TODAY
Prince William, Duke of Cambridge and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge (L) arrive at The Carlyle Hotel, where they will be staying during their official two-day visit to the United States, on December 7, 2014 in New York City.

They're here. How do you know? Follow the blinding camera flashes.

Not to mention Twitter:

Prince William and Duchess Kate arrived in New York this evening for the start of their 48-hour trip to America stretched over three days, including Will's sidetrip to Washington to meet President Obama at the White House.

They arrived via a slightly late commercial flight into JFK. They headed to their hotel, the historic Carlyle Hotel on the edge of Central Park, a favorite of Will's late mother, Princess Diana.

Well-wishers shivered outside the hotel in the cold, kept far back from the entrance by New York police. The gathered media greeted them with a blaze of camera light flashes and the rattle of scores of shutters clicking.

Virgin Atlantic lined up a crowd for them at JFK:

The Empire State Building greeted them with Union Jack colors:

The couple are to attend a reception and dinner at a private residence nearby.

The five-months-pregnant Kate was wearing a plum-colored Seraphine coat, called the Marina and made just for her, over a black dress, according to palace officials, plus black gloves, tights and suede heels.

She's worn this maternity brand before, when she was pregnant with Prince George, and at least one of the blogs that track her style predicted she would wear one of the line's coats in chilly New York.

Their first night in New York, the first-ever for both of them, will be outside the view of the media, at a party for the American Friends of the Royal Foundation.

The New York Post reported it's at the home of Blackstone Group senior managing director John Studzinski, president of the group that supports the young royals' charity foundation.

Among the guests expected: Princess Eugenie, Will's cousin, who lives in New York and works for an auction house founded by close friends of the young royals.

Monday they're both back in the public eye: Will heads to Washington to meet Obama and Vice President Joe Biden at the White House, to get their backing for his campaign for wildlife conservation. Then he will go to the World Bank for a conference and to give a speech on efforts to ban the illegal trade in wildlife.

Back in New York, Kate will be inspecting a child-development center (one of her charitable interests) with first lady of New York Chirlane McCray and attending a lunch for British achievers in the Big Apple.

Will returns in the afternoon to attend a reception celebrating Tusk Trust, United for Wildlife and other conservation groups, with Hillary Clinton and Chelsea Clinton among others expected.

The big media event of Monday will be the NBA game between the Brooklyn Nets and the Cleveland Cavaliers, where the pair will sit courtside for the second half of the game. Photographers devoutly hope they will meet America's young royals, Beyoncé and Jay Z, who used to have a part ownership in the Nets.
