For the first time since 1996, Tiger Woods is out of golf’s top 100.

Woods hasn’t played since he withdrew from the Farmers Insurance Open on February 5th and, despite a rough couple years, he just fell to No. 104 in the world rankings this week. Given his absences from the game and his poor play as of late, the fact that it took him this long to fall out of the top 100 is actually surprising.

The last time Woods was out of the top 100 was way back on Sept. 29, 1996. Woods was just 20 years old, and he was ranked No. 225 in the world. The following week Woods won the Las Vegas Invitational, the first of his 79 PGA Tour victories, and he never looked back.

Now let’s do the thing where we look back at what was going on at the end of September in 1996:

The number one movie in America was The First Wives Club. (Nice.)

The number one single in America was “The Macarena.” THE NUMBER ONE SONG WAS THE MACARENA. HEYYYY.

Woods has not yet announced if he will return for the Masters, and isn’t required to do so until the tournament begins on April 9.

And I’m sorry for getting “The Macarena” stuck in your head. That’s on me.
