Nyong'o, Clinton, Internet: All about the dress!|Off the Record

Artist Nelson Shanks in 2005 working on a portrait of former President Bill Clinton in his Pennsylvania studio.

So, what do 6,000 pearls stolen in a hotel heist, a shadow of presidential infidelity and millions of clicks for black and blue (or white and gold) have in common? It's all about the dress, and recent headlines have been driving national conversations across media platforms:

  • Scandal revisited: Nelson Shank, the artist commissioned by the Clintons to paint a portrait of the 42 nd president, reveals in Philly.com that a shadow to the left of President Clinton in the painting is the infamous blue dress of Monica Lewinsky, the White House intern Clinton had an affair with during his presidency.
  • Real or fake? The mystery of the stolen red carpet Oscars gown, worn by actress Lupita Nyong'o, raises questions — and eyebrows — about the value placed on Hollywood.
  • Color debate: A question posted on Tumblr highlights the differences in what we see — and comes pretty close to breaking the Internet along the way.

These stories and accompanying public debate reveal that what we see — or think we see — depends on who we ask. Listen in as USA TODAY staffers Rem Rieder, Eileen Rivers and Ann Oldenburg join host Brent Jones to discuss the dresses, headlines, opinions and perceptions in this edition of Off the Record.
