6 signs Affleck-Garner divorce was nigh

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner announced their plans to divorce on Tuesday, finally answering tabloid buzz that's trailed them all spring. The couple have been married for 10 years and share three children, Violet, 9, Seraphina, 6, and Samuel, 3.

"We go forward with love and friendship for one another and a commitment to co-parenting our children whose privacy we ask to be respected during this difficult time," the couple said in a statement obtained by USA TODAY.

Admittedly, their normal is far from most. For the past decade, Garner told USA TODAY, up to 20 paparazzi cars used to sit idly on her street, waiting for her and her children. "I would hide in the bottom of a workman's truck and he would drive me out to a car I'd would have hidden in the middle of the night. Just to try to go somewhere."

Here are six signs all was not well in the Affleck-Garner household.

1. When People oddly nominated Garner as 'Best Supporting Spouse'

People may be the most celeb-friendly magazine on the market, but even they wrote an article subtly taking jabs at the couple's marriage just weeks before Affleck's Oscars win for Argo in 2013. The magazine even gave Garner a somewhat condescending superlative for 'Best Supporting Spouse.'

Here's a choice paragraph from the piece:

Although Affleck has made his share of school runs during a busy awards season, in many ways he's an old-fashioned dad. Says a source who knows the couple: "Have you ever seen Mad Men? That's how he approaches [marriage and kids]-providing for your family is your priority, and raising the kids day-to-day is the wife's priority."

2. That Oscars speech

Affleck may have meant well, but when he picked up his award for Argo as best picture in 2013, his praise of his wife landed with a thud.

"I want to thank you for working on marriage for 10 Christmases," he said from the stage. "It's good, it is work, but it's the best kind of work, and there's no one I'd rather work with."

Garner later told the the Telegraph of London, "I know Ben, I knew he meant it as the hugest, warmest compliment in the world. I think he was saying, 'Look, what we have is really real and I value it above all and I'm in it with you and I know you are in it with me.' That's the way I took it."

3. The strange casino stories

In May 2014, TMZ reported Affleck was asked to leave the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas for allegedly counting cards. "That is a true story. I mean, that took place," Affleck later told Details. "I took some time to learn the game and became a decent blackjack player. And once I became decent, the casinos asked me not to play blackjack. I mean, the fact that being good at the game is against the rules at the casinos should tell you something about casinos."

4. When it got personal at home

"Ben and I aren't big fighters," Garner told InStyle in 2012. "But there are times you have to have a hard talk. That's a conversation I couldn't have before. But now I can talk frankly in a way I couldn't do-that's pretty major."

When their children became old enough to understand the media glare, Garner took charge, telling USA TODAY: "For example, my daughter (Violet), there was a bunch of stuff out on magazines about Ben (Affleck) and me, and I pulled something up online and I just said, 'OK, so this is what they say, and you know us, and you live in this house, and what is that like? Do you experience this? This is how you have to look at anything you see printed. And that's just life.'"

5, When the tabloids attacked

Starting this spring the tabloids began to attack the couple, hard. OK! Magazine said the couple was headed for divorce. The National Enquirer said Affleck was having "a mid-life crisis." The New York Daily News purported that the two were "leading separate lives." Star alleged that last week Garner and Affleck had "divorce papers."

6. A moving truck

Good times or not, a moving truck is typically bad PR. A truck was spotted outside their Pacific Palisades family home on June 21. People ran a friendly story that the couple were "remodeling their home, and moving furniture out before construction begins."

Ultimately, Affleck and Garner announced their plans for divorce on Tuesday.
