There are racket smashes and then there’s the total annihilation Grigor Dimitrov did to his Wilson Pro Staff on Sunday night. This wasn’t like when a baseball player cracks his bat against his knee. It’s like if he put it in the wood shredder.
Somehow, Dimitrov managed to crack his racket into two pieces with his angry, powerful throw. Not that he didn’t have cause. The 10th seeded Bulgarian and Maria Sharapova-beau held a 3-0 and 5-2 lead on No. 6 Andy Murray on Sunday, desperately trying to extend their fourth-round match to a decisive fifth set.
But Dimitrov couldn’t convert the set point at 5-2, then, a few games later, seemed to fall apart at 5-5, going down 0-40 on his serve. When Murray smashed a two-handed backhanded for a winner, giving him the crucial break to go up 6-5, Dimitrov had had enough.
It’s Murray’s 16th consecutive major quarterfinal. Dimitrov was defending points from an appearance in last year’s Melbourne quarterfinals. “I couldn’t hide my disappointment,” Dimitrov said after the match. “I’m pissed.”
But let’s go back to the close-up picture of the busted racket.
You can see Dimitrov has “carpe diem” inscribed inside his racket frame.
“Seize the day.”
Maybe tomorrow, Grigor. Maybe tomorrow.
