CES 2015: This 4K TV is thinner than a smartphone

Thin is in, and Sony's newly-announced ultra thin 4K TV is as "in" as it gets. This thing is downright silly when it comes to thickness, and that's no exaggeration. From the front it's huge, sharp, and gorgeous, and from the side it's barely even there. Seriously.

It's called the Sony Bravia X900C, but that long complicated name doesn't really convey exactly what this TV is: It's a massive 65-inch display that measures a crazy 4.9 millimeters thick. Yes, you read that correctly, this gigantic screen is somehow less than 1/5th of an inch thick. That's thinner than my iPhone 6. How is that even possible?

I got to go hands-on with this skinny set — well, more like eyes-on, since I didn't really need to manhandle the TV to know that it was insanely thin — and it's quite a sight to behold. First off, Sony has put some serious work into making this super thin display look just as good as any TV you've ever laid eyes on, with more accurate color and contrast, sharper blues and greens, and a more vivid picture than any 4K TV I've seen. That's important, since you'll be watching a whopping 8 million pixels working to show off a super-detailed picture, which is four times the resolution of the 1080p HDTV you've been watching for the past half decade or more.

Of course, in order to take full advantage of this high-tech beauty, you need some actual 4K content to watch, and that's been hard to find so far. Sony is plenty confident that you'll have no problem finding great stuff to watch on this baby, and says that by the TV's launch this spring, there will be 1,400 titles to watch in full 4K resolution. That, combined with the fact that the TV actually upscales existing content so that it's close to 4K, and there should be plenty to feast our eyes on.

Sony's also going all-in on Android for its newest, thinnest 4K TV, committing to Google's Android TV operating system which was announced in mid-2014. Android TV brings smartphone features to the big screen with support for voice search, music, photos, movies, and even games and apps. Android already claims an 84% market share on smartphones, so bringing a whole bunch of its beloved features to your TV is probably a safe bet, and it's one Sony was happy to take.

But if you were hoping to hop over to your local Best Buy and snatch one up when your paycheck comes in I have some bad news. You'll have to wait until the snow melts to get your hands on this one, as it's not launching until spring. The price also hasn't quite been nailed down yet, so we should all probably start saving our pennies.
