Broadway shows cancel Monday performances

Many Broadway theaters are dark Monday nights; but tonight, thanks to Winter Storm Juno, all lights will be out.

Tourists cross Broadway in Times Square in New York City during a major snowstorm Jan. 23, 2005. Freezing temperatures compounded blizzard-like conditions in parts of the northeastern United States as the first major snowstorm of the year clobbered the region. Authorities begged people to stay off the roads as the high winds sent already bone-chilling temperatures below zero, and blowing snow producing whiteout conditions from New York to Maine, bringing normally congested cities to a standstill.

The Broadway League announced Monday afternoon that all Monday evening performances would be canceled. In a statement, League director Charlotte St. Martin cited the 11 p.m. travel ban" closing city streets to non-emergency traffic, and "other travel restrictions and safety precautions implemented by government authorities."

St. Martin noted that "the safety and security of theatergoers and employees is everyone's primary concern."

The only shows affected tonight will be Chicago, Mamma Mia! and The Phantom of the Opera. An update regarding Tuesday's performances — affecting more than 20 additional productions — will be issued Tuesday morning, according to a subsequent release from the League.
