Raiola deserves more than a 1-game suspension

Yesterday, Dominic Raiola stomped on a downed Bears player’s leg. Today, the NFL decided to stomp on Raiola by suspending him — but for only one game.

Let’s put this punishment in perspective. Remember when Haynesworth got 5 games in 2006 for stomping on Andre Gurode’s helmetless head?

Okay — we know stepping on somebody’s head isn’t the same as a leg, but it’s the same type of offense: an after-the-whistle attack that has nothing to do with the game. (And fellow Detroit Lion Ndamukong Suh got 2 games for another body-stomp in 2011.)

Plus, with Raiola, it’s not an isolated incident; it’s a pattern of behavior. And he’s not taking responsibility; he said the stomp was unintentional.

(Mmmkay, and Luis Suárez just lost his balance and hit his teeth against Chiellini.)

If the NFL is really committed to player safety, the league should stomp on Raiola’s dirty play a little harder.
