WASHINGTON — The Senate failed Wednesday to override President Obama's veto of legislation approving the Keystone XL pipeline.

The vote was 62-37, falling short of the two-thirds majority needed. Eight Democrats voted with Republicans to override the president's veto.

Supporters said the pipeline would create thousands of good-paying jobs and vowed to try to win more support among senators.

"There just weren't sufficient votes in the Senate today to override the veto, and this is clear evidence that more work remains to gather additional support for this project," said Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., who voted to override the veto. "I'll continue to work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to garner that support, but we've got to do it together."

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., said he was glad that the Senate's attempted override failed. Sanders sided with environmental groups that say the pipeline project would contribute to global warming.

"At a time when we should be doing everything we can to promote the development of clean sources of energy, it would have been crazy to let a Canadian oil company ship some of the dirtiest oil on the planet across the United States," Sanders said.
