High school football players honor teammate's last wish, carry casket across field

A high school football player who died following a battle with kidney cancer was honored by his teammates who carried him across their high school field one last time.

According to WSB-TV in Atlanta, one of Malik Sparkman’s final wishes was to go through the tunnel and onto the field with his teammates at Coffee County High School before he was buried. “He always said he wasn’t ever gonna give up and God has him,” Sparkman’s girlfriend, Tia Williams told the TV station. “He was a fighter.”

Video of the procession first appeared on the Coffee County Police Scanner Facebook page and quickly went viral. WALB-TV reported that Sparkman, a standout linebacker, was diagnosed with kidney cancer last year. “Malik was certainly special to all of them,” Robby Pruitt, the school’s football coach, told WALB.
