The first thing you’re taught during your first lesson on serving is that the ball is supposed to land inside the service box. Before the toss, the posture, the arm movement, the racquet speed and the footwork, simply knowing where the ball is supposed to land is paramount. So, in that way Caroline Wozniacki followed directions in her opening round win at Key Biscayne. The only problem was, her serve bounced in the wrong service box.
That’s just bad. Hitting shanks during rallies is one thing, but hitting a dead ball of a serve is something junior players barely do.
Wozniacki couldn’t help but joke about it afterward, because it’s easier to laugh at your horrendous serve when you win 6-0, 6-1.
