Jets, former Packers QB Graham Harrell agree to deal
Short on healthy quarterbacks for Thursday's preseason finale, the New York Jets agreed to terms Wednesday with former Green Bay Packers backup Graham Harrell, a person with knowledge of the deal told USA TODAY Sports. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the contract hadn't been announced.
The Packers cut Harrell, 28, Saturday after he lost out in a competition with Vince Young to be Aaron Rodgers' primary backup. Harrell appeared in four games last season, completing two of four passes for 20 yards.
Mark Sanchez (shoulder) won't play for the Jets on Thursday against the Philadelphia Eagles and is questionable for the regular-season opener. Rookie Geno Smith may be held out Thursday as a precaution, too.
The other quarterbacks on the Jets roster are Greg McElroy (he's recently battled an ankle injury), Matt Simms and now Harrell, who figures to be in uniform in case injuries strike again Thursday night.
