The San Diego Padres, pulling off yet another staggering move, have agreed in principal to a deal to acquire All-Star outfielder Justin Upton from the Atlanta Braves, an official with direct knowledge of the talks told USA TODAY Sports.

The official spoke only on the condition of anonymity since the trade has yet to be finalized.

San Diego has now acquired its entire starting outfield in 24 hours: Upton, Matt Kemp and Wil Myers.

The Braves are getting left-handed pitcher Max Fried, shortstop Jace Peterson, third baseman Dustin Peterson, and outfielder Mallex Smith.

The Padres, under new GM A.J. Preller, also acquired All-Star catcher Derek Norris, right-handed pitched Seth Streich and an international signing slot Thursday from the Oakland A's for right-handers Jesse Hahn and R.J. Alvarez.

Norris, 25, will be the Padres' primary catcher after trading Yasmani Grandal to the Dodgers in the Kemp deal, while also having Ryan Hanigan and Tim Federowicz.

The Padres, also in the last day, signed right-handers Josh Johnson and Brandon Morrow to one-year contracts.
