Amazon announced Tuesday that it is extending the deadline for free Christmas Eve shipping. Shoppers can now order on Dec. 19 and still have presents delivered by Christmas Eve.

SAN FRANCISCO -- Procrastinators of the world, rejoice! Amazon is extending its free shipping deadline for Christmas Eve delivery to Dec. 19.

Customers who purchase items by Friday at 11:59 p.m. ET will still be able to have them delivered free by Christmas Eve, the company announced on Tuesday.

Last year the free shipping cutoff was Dec. 17.

Amazon anticipates that Thursday, Dec. 18, will be its busiest shipping day of the year.

Amazon Prime members, who pay a $99 membership per year, can get free two-day shipping as late as Dec. 22.

For those who really like to leave things to the last minute, Amazon will offer same-day delivery on Christmas Eve in 12 major metro areas. Orders placed as late as 10 a.m. local time will be delivered before Santa makes it down the chimney.

The extension is possible because of Amazon's growing network of fulfillment and sorting centers as well as its ongoing relationship with carriers such as UPS, FedEd and the U.S. Postal Service, the company said.

If it's Christmas day and you still haven't finished your shopping, Amazon has a suggestion -- an online gift card, emailed to the recipient.
