Jolie joins Pitt at 'World War Z' premiere

In her first public appearance since announcing she had undergone a double mastectomy, Angelina Jolie stepped out with partner Brad Pitt at the premiere of his zombie thriller World War Z.

The couple stopped to sign autographs for fans as they walked the black carpet at the film's world premiere on Sunday in London's Leicester Square, reports the AP. In the film, Pitt stars as a United Nations employee battling to save the world.

Dressed in her signature color -- black -- Jolie, 37, told reporters she felt great, and had "been very happy to see the discussion of women's health expanded" by her announcement. In an op-ed piece published in the New York Times, Jolie revealed last month that she had had her breasts removed after discovering she has an inherited genetic mutation that puts her at high risk of breast and ovarian cancer.

"That's who I fell in love with from the very beginning," Pitt told E!. "The person that you see now is the person that I've always known and she's heroic and incredibly strong and will attack any problem head-on and make it work."

In an interview on the day Jolie shared her big news, Pitt shared his feelings with USA TODAY: "I'm quite emotional about it, of course," said the World War Z star. "She could have stayed absolutely private about it and I don't think anyone would have been none the wiser with such good results. But it was really important to her to share the story and that others would understand it doesn't have to be a scary thing. In fact, it can be an empowering thing, and something that makes you stronger and us stronger."

The actress' mother, Marcheline Bertrand, died from ovarian cancer at 56. Last month, Jolie's aunt — Bertrand's sister — died of breast cancer.
