Duke has dismissed junior guard Rasheed Sulaimon from its men's basketball team, the program announced Thursday afternoon.

"Rasheed has been unable to consistently live up to the standards required to be a member of our program," Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said in a statement. "It is a privilege to represent Duke University and with that privilege comes the responsibility to conduct oneself in a certain manner. After Rasheed repeatedly struggled to meet the necessary obligations, it became apparent that it was time to dismiss him from the program."

According to Duke, Sulaimon remains in good academic standing and is expected to finish the spring semester.

Still, the announcement came as quite a shock. Sulaimon played 12 minutes (scoring three points and grabbing two rebounds) Wednesday night in Duke's game at Notre Dame. The Blue Devils return to action Saturday in a top-five showdown at Virginia.

This season, Sulaimon averaged 7.5 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.8 assists off the bench.

Sulaimon's dismissal is a stunning conclusion to a career that began with so much promise. As a freshman in 2012-13, he was named to the ACC's All-Freshman team after averaging 11.6 points and 3.4 rebounds per game.
