Drive On: Nissan unveils Versa Note hatchback

Chris Woodyard, USA TODAY
Nissan will unveil the all-new 2014 Versa Note at the big auto show in Detroit.

Nissan is offering an entirely new version of its small Versa, the 2014 Versa Note.

Nissan says it will be a four-door hatchback, "with segment-exclusive technology, outstanding fuel economy, smart packaging and class-leading cargo space."

The Note will also offer an Around View Monitor parking-assist system.

If Nissan can pull all that off, the Note sounds like a winner.

"As the entry segment is expanding with new models and nameplates, it's not enough to offer value alone," said Al Castignetti, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division, Nissan North America. "The new Nissan Versa Note shakes up the category by satisfying both the emotional and rational needs with features that are truly unexpected in the class."

The Versa Note will get 40 miles per gallon highway and start at $13,990, the company says. It's expected to go on sale this summer.

Nissan says it is the fourth of five new models launched over 15 months.
