Celebrity superlatives: This week's winners and losers

We separate the cool kids from the nerds

Justin Bieber, in Los Angeles, goes bold and bleaches his hair.

USA TODAY's Andrea Mandell sorts through celebrity news and separates the cool kids from the nerds. It's kind of like your high school yearbook — if your classmates were pop stars and late-night TV hosts.

Worst follicle decision: Justin Bieber

The Biebs has gone blonde, people. We're talking peroxide-white, Playboy bunny, Brad-Pitt-in-2004 blonde. How tragic is it? In the words of Jennifer Aniston: "Billy Idol called — he wants his look back." Please recolor your hair before Christmas. Thanks, The World.

Second-best selfie: Taylor Swift

It's near impossible to compete with Ellen DeGeneres' record-breaking Oscars' selfie. So what to do? If you're Taylor Swift, you concoct the world's second-best star-packed photo. The all-star snap — featuring Jay Z, Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, Sam Smith, Haim and BFF Karlie Kloss — is the gift she gave herself for her birthday, taken backstage at New York's Jingle Ball. "So this is being 25," Swift captioned her photo on Instagram. Not too shabby.

Most mesmerizing in marsala (tie!): Beyoncé and Rihanna

Let's be kind here. When Pantone announced "marsala" as 2015's color of the year, the fashion-forward crowd seemed a bit …underwhelmed? Until Beyoncé walked up in a wine-hued frock at a New York event. And Rihanna upped the ante with a stunning marsala-hued Zac Posen gown, plus a Chopard jeweled necklace at her Diamond Ball. Suddenly, marsala seems a lot cooler.

Hottest millennial Hanukkah beats: Jimmy Fallon

Move over, Adam Sandler! Jimmy Fallon is getting into the dreidel-meets-Dr. Luke business. "All I do is spin-spin-spin-spin-no-matta-what-what-what," Fallon recently rapped in a holiday-themed segment on his show, thanks to a suggestion from Twitter fan @RudyMezzy. And then, the real goldmine: a holiday take on Miley Cyrus' Wrecking Ball, as suggested by @tacomeatforever: "I came in like a matzoh balllll…"

Most irresistible toddler portrait: Prince George

As if we needed help swooning over the littlest royal, the Palace released three (three!) new portraits of the adorable chubster festooned in his holiday finest. How did his mum and dad dress the almost 17-month-old brother-to-be, you ask? Oh, just the cutest, most British vest ever, paired with knee socks and apple red cheeks. Call us mushy, but in a world full of bad news, seeing little George ham it up for the camera melted our hearts — just in time for the holidays.

Most inconvenient illness: Angelina Jolie

After a hell of a week for the actress/director, including being poorly name-checked in the Sony e-mail leaks and failing to secure any Golden Globes nominations, Jolie came down with an old-school case of chicken pox. The Unbroken director missed her own premiere, as well as a fancy brunch in L.A. on Sunday intended to raise support among Academy voters. Jolie sent her regrets via a YouTube video, but for once, the most famous woman in the world showed signs of stress. Feel better, Angie.
