Drive On: New Ram Black pickup goes truck noir

The new Ram Black Express is true to its name

For those who believe black is beautiful, Chrysler's Ram division has your pickup truck.

It's the new Ram Black Express -- and it's black-on-black-on black. To Ram, that means it is "baddest-looking factory-built truck on the market."

How black is it? There is a black paint job, black 20-inch black aluminum wheels, a black front fascia with fog lamps, black grille surround with black hex-link inserts, black rear bumper and black Ram's head badges on the grille and tailgate. The body-side badging was removed. Maybe it wasn't black enough.

"Ram Trucks are known for their bold, in-your-face presence," said Reid Bigland, CEO of the Ram truck brand, in a statement. "The new Black Express takes Ram's aggressive good looks to an all new sinister level by 'blackening out' the entire truck while maintaining a great price."

Of course, there were some thing that just couldn't be black. The halogen projector headlamps shine white, but have black bezels. The 15 LED lights for turn signals are amber. The taillights include black finishes, but the lights themselves are red.

The 2013 Ram Black Express is available in two- and four-wheel-drive models and a choice of regular cab, quad cab or crew cab body styles. The price for all this blackness starts at $26,955, plus $1,095 destination charge.
