'Shark Tank' star has important financial advice for NFL players

Daymond John started his career selling $10 hats outside the New York Coliseum. Now, the man behind FUBU is worth $250 million and the star of the ABC reality series Shark Tank. For The Win sat down with John for our Celeb Pick ‘Em Series and to discuss a wide array of topics including being a New York sports fan, his very unique favorite throwback uniform, and his big screen appearance in Sharknado 2.

What’s the biggest difference between New York sports fans, and other fans?

“It’s every New Yorker’s god given right to curse somebody out just on the subway. When we’re fans, we curse out babies. If you happen to not be a New Yorker, we’re going to curse you out. That’s just our right.”

Which athlete has the best brand?

“LeBron James does the best job. He’s so polarizing but no matter what he delivers at the end of the day and he’s marketable.”

Adidas just unveiled their NBA Christmas uniforms. What do you think about alternative jerseys as a whole?

“I think it’s amazing. If people weren’t buying it, then teams would take those alternative jerseys off the market. Especially the vintage ones because the normal fan is going to want something with just the number and the logo on it but the way to sell them something that costs more is to go back and offer them a vintage option.”

What’s your favorite jersey?

“The one uniform I really love is my old Red Lobster uniform, which I look at to remember how desperately I needed to create my own business because I was serving shrimp with tartar sauce.”

When FUBU took off, what was the most outrageous thing you bought?

“I purchased a couple of homes. I remember when I went down to Miami shopping and I ended up buying two homes. It wasn’t too bright, but that’s what I did.”

You appeared in Sharknado 2. You died. But you didn’t get killed by a shark …

“Sharknado 2 was funny, I loved it. I got killed by the Statue of Liberty. The rumors were that I died by the Statue of Liberty because sharks don’t kill other sharks. I don’t think it was that planned out.”

If the Jets and Giants were on Shark Tank, and you had to invest in one, who would you pick?

“The Jets are full of smoke and mirrors and the Giants are holding on to yesteryear. I most likely would go with the Giants since they have some level of a track record, but I wouldn’t be that excited about it.”
